Four Pixel Folds, four cracks in the same place beside the hinge
Google says the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is three times more durable, with a new gearless hinge and a flatter crease. Reviewers cannot agree on the crease, and the bend test found the same seam it has found since 2023.
Four generations of Google foldable, four bend tests, one crack, and every time it opens in almost exactly the same place, along the antenna lines that sit beside the hinge. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is the phone Google described as "three times more durable than last year's device", and it broke there again.
That is a strange result to sit with, because by nearly every other measure this is the most carefully engineered folding Pixel yet. Google says the hinge is new and gearless, the outer glass is ceramic, the back cover is a glass fibre composite "designed to be nearly impossible to crack", and the whole assembly is rated for 83 million open-close cycles in laboratory testing. None of that is nothing. It just does not touch the failure the internet keeps filming.
What the antenna line actually is
The weak point is not a manufacturing slip. It is a hole in the metal, deliberately placed. Radio signal cannot escape a sealed aluminium frame, so phone makers cut plastic-filled gaps, called antenna bands, into the chassis. On a foldable those gaps end up crowded next to the hinge, the one region already carrying the most stress. The report of the latest teardown-style test noted the same crack location across the original Pixel Fold, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and now the 11, along with an outer display that came away from the frame in one piece and an inner screen that scratched at roughly fingernail hardness.
Whether that constitutes a durability finding is where reviewers stop agreeing. TechOdyssey, a Pixel-focused channel, spent an entire video arguing it does not: bending a folding phone backwards with roughly 100 pounds of thumb pressure at a fixed point is not a test, by that reading, because nothing is measured. A vice with known weights would count. So would sitting on the phone a hundred times, or a night of rolling onto it. The video also raised a point most bend-test arguments skip: the Pixel Folds keep IP68 dust and water protection, a durability advantage over the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra that shows up in ordinary use rather than on a bench.
The complaint about standardisation is fair. It also argues past the thing that makes it interesting. Nobody needs the crack to predict pocket failure. It is useful as a repeated measurement of one design decision across four product cycles, run the same crude way each time. Google changed the hinge, the glass and the back cover, and the seam still gives first.
The crease nobody can agree on
Something similar is happening one layer up. Google credits the new hinge's "larger bend radius and thicker glass layer" with improved crease performance, and reviewers who handled the phone came away with three genuinely different readings.
TechRadar's hands-on, comparing the device directly against a Galaxy Z Fold 8, described the inner panel as folding basically flat , hard to see any crease, close enough that the reviewer called it fundamentally flat , and explained the mechanism underneath: thicker ultra-thin flexible glass under a polymer layer, sitting on a titanium panel joined by a bendable metal mesh.
ShortCircuit's unboxing reached the opposite conclusion within seconds of opening the phone: the crease does not feel current generation, it feels a little last gen, and a Fold 8 examined moments earlier was slightly less creasy. That video's framing of the whole launch was that the biggest controversy anyone could muster is that the two halves are slightly different thicknesses , felt on the hardware as a distinct ridge.
Marques Brownlee split the difference: yes, a new hinge mechanism, but a difference more subtle than on other new-generation foldables he had handled , still a bit of a crease, not terrible, disappearing to the eye when you look at content, and not the step up Samsung and Oppo managed at the same premium price. The reviewer at SoulOfTech, who has been using the phone as a daily driver with his own SIM in it, put it plainly , visible from a side angle, invisible head-on, and not something that bothered him.
Where the money actually went
Strip out the disputed millimetre and the ledger reads clearly. The outer display is now 6.5 inches with thinner bezels and, for the first time on a Pixel Fold's cover screen, an LTPO panel that can drop to 1Hz. Both screens hit 3,600 nits, up 20 per cent. The phone is 239g, roughly 10 per cent lighter and about a millimetre thinner. Wireless charging moves to Qi 2.2 at 25W, with wired charging unchanged at 30W. The battery capacity actually went down; Google claims over 24 hours anyway, and SoulOfTech's real-world result, from 7am to nearly midnight with about 10 per cent left, broadly matches it, though not with much room spare.
The camera layout is familiar, but the 48MP main camera uses a new, brighter sensor. It is joined by an ultrawide and a 10MP 5x telephoto, with up to 30x digital zoom. Both selfie cameras stay at 10MP, well short of the 42MP on the Pro and Pro XL. That telephoto is still the clearest hardware win over a Z Fold 8 that ships without one at a near-identical price.
And the price went up 100 dollars, to 1,899. Brownlee's read on the whole Pixel 11 line , memory costs biting, improvements frustratingly incremental, and the one conspicuous new hardware feature, the rear HiLight LED, currently responding to incoming calls and hands-free Gemini use, lands hardest here. Buy the Pixel 11 Pro Fold for the cover screen that behaves like a normal phone, the telephoto, IP68 and the Pixelsnap magnets. Do not treat the redesigned hinge as proof that the hinge-adjacent seam has been solved. One manually bent unit cannot predict normal ownership, but the repeated failure point across Nelson's four tests remains a reason for caution.
