A used Galaxy S23 still has security time, not Android 18
One UI 9 is the fourth and last major upgrade Samsung promised the Galaxy S23. Security patches should run into early 2028. The S23 FE is on a later clock.

A used Galaxy S23, S23+ or S23 Ultra bought in November 2026 still has a software future. It does not have another Android version after this one. Samsung has started delivering One UI 9, based on Android 17, as the fourth and final major upgrade it promised when those phones launched in February 2023 on Android 13. Android 14, 15, 16 and 17 make four. There is no Android 18 on the schedule.
This is the practical question for anyone shopping a two-and-a-half-year-old flagship: how much support is left, and of which kind. Samsung's support page for the S23 series, as reported by tech-ish, lists four years of One UI upgrades and five years of security updates. The OS clock and the security clock are different. The OS clock is ending with this download. The security clock, counted from February 2023, runs into early 2028. Samsung has not published a calendar end date.
Who this advice fits, and who it does not
It fits a buyer looking at an S23, S23+ or S23 Ultra who wants to know whether the phone is a two-year keep or a six-month stopgap. It does not automatically fit the Galaxy S23 FE. tech-ish notes that Samsung's S23 support page names only the S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra. Samsung Japan's roadmap, the same report says, puts the FE in mid-January 2027 for One UI 9, a later and separate wave.
Phandroid, citing Android Authority's report of Samsung's Korean community forum, says Korea started the S23 rollout on 14 October 2026 and that Europe had begun by 21 October. US timing was not confirmed in that report. tech-ish recorded the Korean build ending in GZIF with the October 2026 security patch, a file of about 3GB. Netzwelt reaches the same February 2028 security estimate from the February 2023 launch plus five years, and notes Samsung does not always cut support on the exact anniversary.
What One UI 9 adds on an S23
The beta that reached India in early September, tech-ish reported, showed a more customisable Quick Panel, DeX and Notes changes, and new accessibility features. Beta testers on Samsung's forum did not find new Galaxy AI tools. Features Samsung lists for the Galaxy S26, such as My FanCam and Now Nudge, are not confirmed for the S23. Phandroid likewise says Samsung has not said which newer AI features arrive.
After this, the remaining support is security patches. Phandroid, citing SamMobile, reports an expectation that the S23 will skip One UI 9.5, the smaller follow-up due in the first half of 2027, as the S22 skipped One UI 8.5. Samsung has not confirmed that skip. The contrast is the next Galaxy. Samsung's 2024 policy, as Phandroid summarises it, gives the Galaxy S24 and later seven years of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. The S23 missed that policy by about a year. A used S24 still has major Android versions ahead. A used S23 has patches.
Mistakes, then the check before you pay
Common mistakes: treating the FE as the same phone; assuming One UI 9 brings the S26 AI set; counting five years of security as five more years from today rather than from February 2023; buying an S23 in a region that has not received the file yet and expecting Android 18 later.
Check the exact model name. Open Settings, then Software update, and see whether One UI 9 is offered. If it is not, that may be a regional stagger, not a missing entitlement. Budget for security support into early 2028 and for no further platform upgrades. If the reason for buying used is that the phone will keep getting Android, the S24 is the first Samsung flagship in this family that still has that story. The S23's remaining value is a finished OS and a known patch window.
