The iPhone Duo is real: Apple prices its first foldable at $1,999

Apple's first foldable starts at $1,999 with a 7.6-inch inner display, no Face ID, no telephoto lens and pre-orders that do not open until October 16.

The name was a moving target until the morning of the event — Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported only hours before showtime that Apple's first foldable would be called the iPhone Duo rather than the iPhone Ultra, the name, as Gurman put it on X, "everyone calls it the Ultra internally." The phone itself is no longer a rumor. At its "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9, Apple unveiled the Duo at $1,999, with pre-orders opening October 16 and store availability on October 23.

Apple chief executive John Ternus, in his first iPhone launch since taking over on September 1, did not undersell it. "iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original," he said in the company's press release. "With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what's possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone."

A passport, not a flip

The Duo opens like a book rather than clamshelling like a Razr. Tom's Guide's live report confirms the basics: a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display and a 5.4-inch outer screen, both at the same aspect ratio, both with ProMotion, Always-On and up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. The inner panel carries a matte "nano-texture" finish and hides its FaceTime camera under the display until an app needs it. The frame is grade 5 titanium, with a titanium-and-aluminium blend at the hinge, the whole device is rated IP68, and Touch ID lives in the side button — there is no Face ID here.

Inside sits the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro models, plus Apple's C2 modem, which the company says delivers meaningfully faster uploads than the C1X while drawing 15% less energy. Two batteries, one in each half, are managed as a single unit: Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer, and 24 hours split evenly, with a 50% charge in around 20 minutes.

The hinge is the spec sheet

Apple spent its keynote minutes on mechanics — a hinge with a "custom variable torque profile," over 100 precision components and carbon fiber support plates. Brian Tong, who got brief hands-on time, found the hardware lived up to the script: the hinge holds multiple angles and folds fully flat, and the crease is visible only from certain angles because of the matte coating. He notes the under-display camera surfacing and vanishing with the app in use, and finishes the demo sounding ready to buy one.

Software that knows it folds

iOS 27 was rebuilt around the shape. The dock runs vertically along the right edge on both displays, the inner screen opens to two home pages with a widget-filled "Today View," and apps can run split-screen, in two Safari windows side by side, or pinned to the top while you message below. Set the Duo down and it becomes a bedside clock; Apple Pencil support over USB-C arrives later this year on either display.

The camera compromise

There is no dedicated telephoto lens. The Duo pairs a 48-megapixel Fusion main camera with a 2x crop "telephoto" and the same 48-megapixel Fusion ultrawide as the iPhone 18 Pro, plus 4K/120fps video, a Center Stage front camera that works in any orientation, and a Duo Preview mode that lets your subject see themselves on the outer display.

Casual reaction among creators landed on that compromise. TechOdyssey, who covers foldables daily, observed that the Duo is effectively carrying last year's cameras and flagged the price context: Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 is discounted to $1,599 from its $1,899 list price without a trade-in, putting it $400 under the Duo on day one. He had expected $2,499, though, and called $1,999 a fairer opening price for a first foldable — while welcoming the return of Touch ID, the IP68 rating and Pencil support as things Samsung currently lacks.

The money and the wait

$1,999 buys 256GB; the range tops out at 2TB. The six-week gap between announcement and pre-order is unusually long for Apple — Macworld's pre-event reporting had already flagged supply questions and analyst warnings that the foldable could slip well past the iPhone 18 Pro, which ships September 18. The same reporting predicted the trade-offs that arrived: Touch ID instead of Face ID, and no telephoto on a $2,000 phone. So the foldable iPhone arrives as exactly the compromise-filled first effort the rumour mill described. It will be judged in October, when the hinge, the crease and those battery numbers meet a month in somebody's pocket.
