iPhone 18 Pro Max may get the aperture blades. The smaller Pro may not

Leakers and Mark Gurman now point the first iPhone variable-aperture camera at the Pro Max only. The stills pitch is oversold. The video job is the one that might matter on 9 September.

Apple last split its Pro cameras in 2023. The iPhone 15 Pro Max shipped with 5x optical zoom. The smaller Pro did not. That gap closed a year later. A week before the 9 September event, the same argument is back, and this time the missing piece is a set of aperture blades.

Ice Universe, the Weibo tipster with a long record on Apple hardware, told followers that variable aperture will sit only on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Machine translations of the post frame it as a volume problem: the mechanism needs room the smaller chassis cannot spare, so "top-tier imaging" comes with "the weight of a brick." Bloomberg's Mark Gurman then read Apple's "Surprise and shine" invite as a nod to "the mechanical aperture on the iPhone 18 Pro Max," which is as close as a reliable Apple reporter has come to backing the split.

A hole that finally changes size

Every iPhone Pro main camera from the 14 Pro through the 17 Pro uses a fixed ƒ/1.78 opening. The lens is wide open, all the time. Exposure is a software job: shutter, ISO, computational HDR. A variable aperture puts a physical iris in that path. MacRumors' Tim Hardwick compared it to a pupil. In bright sun the opening shrinks. In the dark it widens.

CNET's Jeff Carlson walked through why photographers care. Samsung tried a two-stop version on the Galaxy S9 and S10, switching between ƒ/1.5 and ƒ/2.4. Xiaomi put a wider range, ƒ/1.6 to ƒ/4, on the 14 Ultra in 2024. Both companies later dropped the hardware. Apple has never shipped it.

The stills pitch is control, not more light. The phone is already at its widest aperture. Stopping down can keep a distant landmark sharp when the subject is close, and it can turn streetlights into starbursts. CNET editor at large Andrew Lanxon, who reviewed the Xiaomi 14 Ultra in 2024, made the point again recently while listing Android features Apple should adopt: "By closing down the aperture, I was able to create authentic starburst effects around points of light like streetlights in exactly the same way that you would by using a narrow aperture with a mirrorless camera and lens on a tripod." He called those frames more professional than "the weird amorphous blobs" other phones put around night lights.

Patrick Holland, CNET's director of content, was less romantic about two-stop hardware. "The Galaxy S9 was wild. It had a mechanical aperture that you could see." It also only had those two settings. If Apple's range is wider, Carlson still expects the Camera app to pick an f-stop automatically so most people never see a dial.

The video job is the one that might actually matter

Hardwick's cleaner argument is outdoors video. With a fixed wide opening, an iPhone in sunlight has to snatch each frame very quickly to avoid blowing highlights. Motion can look unnaturally sharp. Closing the iris lets the camera keep a more natural shutter for the frame rate, which is how dedicated cameras avoid that jitter without stacking ND filters. Several MacRumors commenters, including people who shoot video on iPhone, made the same point: a couple of stops of mechanical control is more useful for 1/48-second motion blur than for fake bokeh.

That last part is the rumour that does not survive contact with optics. Portrait mode already simulates shallow depth of field at the widest opening. Adding a smaller hole does not magically deepen computational bokeh. Fernando, presenting for 9to5Mac, talked as if variable aperture would "let more light in in darker environments" and deliver physical depth of field instead of "made up" digital f-stops. The hardware can do the first of those only if Apple's widest setting is faster than today's ƒ/1.78, which no supply-chain report has confirmed. The second is real for video and for stopping down. It is not a replacement for a 50mm ƒ/1.4 on a full-frame body.

Why the smaller Pro may lose again

AppleInsider notes that a variable iris needs more internal volume than a fixed lens. Ice Universe's brick line is the same claim in plainer language. The iPhone 15 Pro Max's tetraprism was the last time Apple parked a camera first in the bigger phone; the 16 Pro inherited it. AppleInsider says the component has been reported in production, and that the feature was presumed to land on both Pro models until the August Weibo post. A split is plausible. It is also unfinished reporting. Apple has not confirmed a sensor, a range of f-stops, or which chassis gets the blades.

Fernando's 9to5Mac briefing also put the Pro cameras against the rumoured foldable "iPhone Ultra," which he said is expected to ship a two-lens rear array and skip a telephoto because the chassis is too thin. That is a separate compromise. It does not tell you whether the 6.3-inch Pro gets the iris. Apple has not confirmed any of this. The event is Wednesday. If Gurman's reading of the invite is right, the shine is on the Max. If you already refused the 15 Pro Max because it felt like a brick, that is the buying question to take into the keynote, not another rumour about computational bokeh.
