Huawei folded the Mate XT 2 inward. The privacy screen still costs extra
The third Huawei tri-fold finally hides its 10.2-inch OLED, adds a Samsung-style privacy panel as a paid SKU, and starts near $3,000 in China with no Google apps.
The first Huawei tri-fold left a slab of flexible OLED hanging on the outside, which is a polite way of saying the expensive bit took the scuffs. The Mate XT 2, launched in China on 7 September, folds both wings inward. Dominic Preston at The Verge put it without flattery: Huawei “has clearly had half an eye on Samsung during development.” The 10.2-inch inner panel now hides when the phone is closed. The cover is a 6.5-inch LTPO OLED. Unfolded thickness is 3.5mm. Folded, 12.3mm. Weight is 299 grams.
SamMobile had already argued the old accordion hinge was the wrong bet. One leaf folded in, the other folded out, so part of the plastic screen stayed exposed in a drop. The Galaxy Z TriFold’s dual-inward layout kept the inner OLED fully covered. Huawei has now copied that geometry and given it a G-shaped hinge. The company’s China product page still warns that crease, a little hinge rattle, and a prescribed fold order are normal. Fold the side without the volume keys first. Get that wrong and the device can be damaged.
Privacy as a SKU, not a switch
The headline extra is a hardware privacy OLED, the same idea Samsung put on the Galaxy S26 Ultra: pixels that fire at a narrower angle so the screen goes dark from the side. Engadget’s Jackson Chen called the XT 2 the first tri-panel foldable with that panel built in. It is not on every unit. Preston reported the privacy screen as a ¥1,000 (about $150) add-on on the 16GB/1TB configuration. Notebookcheck’s Hannes Brecher noted a second catch: unlike Samsung’s implementation, Huawei’s privacy mode covers the whole panel at once, not a selected window. Huawei’s own footnotes go further. To keep landscape usable, the USB-port edge does not privacy-protect. Double-tap the smart button or the cover screen to toggle it. An optional alert can pop up at airports and stations.
GSMArena and Notebookcheck both put the regular inner panel at 90Hz; it is a 3K LTPO OLED. Notebookcheck says the 120Hz inner panel belongs to the privacy-SKU top model. The cover hits 6,500 nits peak, GSMArena says, under basalt glass Huawei brands as Kunlun. The inner stack uses ultra-thin glass plus a steel buffer layer. Those durability percentages are Huawei lab numbers, not independent drop scores.
A Kirin with homework still due
This is the first phone Huawei has put its Kirin 9050 Pro in. Android Authority’s Tushar Mehta recorded the company’s claims: a 9-core design, 46 percent more CPU performance and 142 percent more ray-traced GPU performance versus the Kirin 9030 Pro. GSMArena heard a slightly softer “over 42 percent” versus the Mate XTs. Huawei does not name the process node. An on-device AI model is listed at 30 billion total parameters with 2 billion active — a mixture-of-experts signature, though Huawei does not use the term. None of that has been independently benchmarked on a shipping unit yet.
The rear module sits on the centre panel, which is new. GSMArena lists a 50-megapixel RYYB main camera on a 1/1.28-inch sensor with LOFIC, a 50-megapixel 3.5x periscope, a 40-megapixel ultrawide, and a third-generation Red Maple colour sensor. Notebookcheck adds a variable aperture from f/1.49 to f/4.0. Selfies are 8-megapixel, inner and outer. The 5,600mAh cell charges at 66W wired and 50W wireless. That is a modest pack for a 10.2-inch tablet-phone, and it has not been run through a third-party endurance lab.
Odd extras that actually shipped: IP58 and IP59 ratings, with Huawei’s page stressing this is not a professional waterproof phone; ECG via the metal side rails, labelled as non-medical; satellite messaging in China; HarmonyOS 7 with three-app split view. M-Pen 3 Mini support is real. The stylus is sold separately unless you buy the 2TB kit.
Three thousand dollars, no Play Store
Pricing starts at CNY 19,999 (about $2,980) for 16GB/256GB. The 1TB privacy model is CNY 24,999 (about $3,725). The 2TB special edition with a stylus reaches CNY 29,999 (about $4,470). Colours are black, purple and white. Engadget does not expect a US sale while Huawei remains treated as a national security risk. Android Authority had no international availability to report. China deliveries are listed from 12 September.
Huawei will discount one inner-screen replacement in the first year and throw in film-and-clean visits. That is an admission as much as a perk. A tri-fold that finally protects the panel is progress. A $3,000 HarmonyOS slab with a privacy tax, an untested Kirin, and a battery that has not yet been asked to last a day of 10-inch use is still a China-only curiosity until someone lives with it.
