Fairphone Gen 6+ shows why repairability is a software promise too
Europe has new repair rights, but the Fairphone Gen 6+ demonstrates the harder test: parts, software and support must survive together.

A repairable phone is not merely a phone whose battery can be reached with a screwdriver. It is a chain of promises: the case opens, the part is sold, the replacement works without a software veto, and the operating system remains safe long enough for the repair to make financial sense.
The new Fairphone Gen 6+ landed in time to test that chain. It went on sale weeks after the 31 July 2026 date from which EU member states had to apply the Right to Repair Directive. Fairphone is also selling the device directly in the United States for the first time. Its pitch is therefore bigger than another worthy European curiosity. This is a $649.99 phone asking whether ownership can become a product feature again.
The screwdriver is the easy part
The Gen 6+ preserves the 12 replaceable modules of the Gen 6 while moving to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and 12GB of memory. Fairphone says software support will run until 2033 and backs the device with a five-year warranty. Last year's modular accessories and repair approach remain intact, so the refresh has not turned the parts catalogue into instant archaeology.
The underlying design is unusually legible. In iFixit's 2025 teardown of the Gen 6, the back cover comes away after two T5 Torx screws. Four more screws secure the battery; eight secure the display. The USB-C port, cameras and daughterboard are separate modules. iFixit awarded the design 10 out of 10. The fiddly job, if it ever comes, is a power-button repair: contact pads glued to the frame and delicate ribbon cables.
Hands-on reviews of that same platform show what the construction feels like away from a teardown bench. Pro Android's Spanish-language video of the Gen 6 treats the screw-in accessories and replaceable battery as the phone's defining distinction. Italian reviewer Andrea Galeazzi, looking at the /e/OS edition, frames the hardware as both a repair choice and a Google-free software choice. Those are not the same virtue. One keeps components alive; the other gives an owner another way to keep the device useful.
Europe has noticed the software lock
The EU rules sharpen that distinction. The Right to Repair Directive requires manufacturers to repair products that are technically repairable under relevant EU rules, including after the legal guarantee period. It also says manufacturers cannot use contractual clauses, hardware or software techniques to obstruct repair unless there is a legitimate and objective justification.
Separate ecodesign requirements for smartphones and tablets, applying to models placed on the EU market since June 2025, require access for professional repairers to necessary firmware or software. They also bring spare-parts availability, update support and an EU repairability score into the buying conversation. A glossy back can still be glued down, but the policy direction is clear: repair cannot stop at physically fitting a component.
Fairphone's promise is more persuasive than the 10/10 badge alone. It sells the modules, publishes instructions and commits to software support. The Gen 6+ is available with standard Android or Murena's /e/OS. A perfect teardown score cannot guarantee that every future update lands on time, but a dated support commitment gives a battery replacement in 2030 a reason to exist.
The ownership tax is paid up front
The compromise is visible at checkout. The Guardian's Samuel Gibbs lists the Gen 6+ at £569, €649 or $649.99 with Google Android, and judges its performance, cameras and battery life decent rather than class-leading. Fairphone rates the battery to retain at least 80% capacity after 1,000 full cycles. Buyers are paying a premium-phone price for a mid-range processor and camera system.
That makes the usual spec-table comparison incomplete, though not irrelevant. A cheaper rival may be faster today and still be the better purchase for someone who replaces a phone every two years. Fairphone's calculation improves only if the owner keeps it, repairs it and benefits from the long support window. Repairability unused is simply expensive engineering.
The Gen 6+ also exposes the limit of regulation. The EU can make parts, tools and repair software harder to withhold, but it cannot make a repair economical, ensure a local shop stocks every module, or guarantee that an eight-year-old app still supports the hardware. Fairphone is attempting to supply the missing commercial layer itself.
A phone sold as an agreement
The processor bump is not the point. Compatibility is: a newer phone that keeps last year's repair logic, with a declared end date for support. That is less thrilling than a camera zoom demonstration and more valuable when a charging port fails in year four.
The buyer still accepts middling speed for the price. In return, the phone is designed to survive the first broken component instead of using it as an eviction notice.
