Find X10 Pro Max reviews put sensors ahead of megapixels

Preston, Smith and Triggs shot the Find X10 Pro Max against different phones. They share a 26-megapixel default and a fight over sensor size, not the badge.

Prepared by theBench·how our desks work

The Find X10 Pro Max is being sold on three 200-megapixel cameras. The reviewers who shot with it keep coming back to something duller: how large each sensor is, and what the phone saves unless you open a menu.

Dominic Preston at The Verge put the poster in its place: the first triple 200-megapixel phone is either "a masterful feat of engineering or a load of hyped-up marketing nonsense," he wrote, and "the truth is somewhere in the middle." Mat Smith at Engadget ranked the phone against the Find X9 Ultra, not against the megapixel count. Robert Triggs at Android Authority held a Pixel 11 Pro XL in the other hand.

The file you get is 26 megapixels

Preston and Smith agree on the default file. The camera bins a 200-megapixel capture to 26 megapixels across the rear lenses. Preston notes that most Android phones still land near 12 or 12.5 megapixels, and that this one drops to 12.6 megapixels in darker scenes, trading detail for light.

GSMArena's sheet splits the hardware: a Samsung ISOCELL HPC on the main camera, ISOCELL HP5 on the telephoto and the ultrawide. Preston lists the main sensor at a 1/1.3-inch type, f/1.5, and the 3x telephoto at 1/1.56-inch, f/2.1. Smith says the Find X9 Ultra's main sensor is a 1/1.12-inch Sony, about 25 percent larger, and that the Ultra won his low-light pairs, especially in Hasselblad Master mode. The Pro Max 3x crops to about 6x. It does not reach the Ultra's 10x.

The other phone decides the winner

Triggs found the main cameras close to the Pixel 11 Pro XL at a normal viewing size. Oppo's 26-megapixel default held a little more detail, Pixel color was often more vivid, and Pixel processing looked more aggressive. The hardware gap opened on the ultrawide: Oppo's 1/1.56-inch sensor against the Pixel's 1/2.51-inch. Both looked fine as a full frame. Cropped, he describes the Pixel image as oversharpened and smeared, and he notes a little extra fringing at the edge of Oppo's ultrawide.

On zoom, the Pixel's 5x crops to 10x without upscaling. Oppo's 3x goes to 6x and, Triggs writes, out to 13x from the 200-megapixel telephoto. At 20x he saw Oppo resolve finer detail and the Pixel lean on upscaling. Preston's favorite camera phone is still the Vivo X300 Ultra, and he places this Oppo a little behind the Find X9 Ultra. Triggs, judging it only against the Pixel, treats the Oppo as the more versatile of that pair. Read the other phone before you trust the ranking.

DeepPix split, then the phone you can buy

DeepPix, on the main sensor only, is where the reviews do not agree. Preston credits that camera with about 17 stops, bright lamps held together in night scenes, and calls the range almost unprecedented in a phone. Smith says he did not see a substantial dynamic-range gain in stills, and that the feature looked aimed at video. Triggs accepts the 17-stop account of the sensor and calls the pictures more subtle: few scenes troubled either phone, and the Pixel washed out only when he aimed into bright backlight.

Preston puts the start price at 1,499 pounds or 1,799 euros, about $2,000 in his own conversion. Smith says US retail is, again, a hard place to find one. GSMArena says Europe's cell is 7,150mAh because of air-transport limits, down from a 7,500mAh cell last year's model sold in every market, while other markets get 8,000mAh. Preston calls it a two-day phone "easy" without saying which cell he tested. That is not a shared lab score. Engadget reports charging up to 80W on a wire, and 50W wireless only on Oppo's own AirVOOC charger.

Where these reviewers cropped or shot wide, the files favor the Pro Max over a Pixel 11 Pro XL. Low light against the Find X9 Ultra still went to the older phone in the pairs Smith and Preston shot. Neither result puts a unit on a US shelf, or gives a European buyer the 8,000mAh cell. Check the battery your market ships before you shop from the ranking.
