Report says Samsung ordered Exynos boards for the Galaxy S27 Ultra

MoneyToday reports that Samsung ordered an Exynos 2700 mainboard after Snapdragon development was nearly complete. It preserves an option, not a confirmed launch plan.

Chip rumours usually arrive as benchmark screenshots. This one arrived as a report about a motherboard order. That is more consequential than an anonymous benchmark screenshot, but it still rests on unnamed industry sources.

Korean outlet MoneyToday reported this week that Samsung's MX mobile division and its System LSI chip arm have coordinated to build an Exynos-based mainboard for the Galaxy S27 Ultra. GSMArena, Android Authority and SamMobile all picked the story up within a day, and the detail every one of them flagged is the same: the timing is wrong.

Why the schedule is the story

The S27 Ultra's Snapdragon development was described by MoneyToday's sources as nearly complete. MoneyToday's source called it unusual to add an Exynos version after major Snapdragon development was nearly complete. Supporting another silicon platform would also require its own board and software validation for a phone that is roughly a year out.

The report does not establish why Samsung added the option. Secondary coverage points to confidence in the Exynos programme, but neither Samsung nor MoneyToday confirms a production decision or a yield figure.

The numbers, and who is holding them

Separate Korean reporting says Samsung's internal Geekbench 6.5 multi-core testing put the Exynos 2700 19% ahead of the expected standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 9.5% ahead of its expected Pro variant. Other internal tests reportedly covered GPU, AI and power efficiency, but the conditions and retail hardware remain unavailable for independent checking.

Every part of that sentence deserves a qualifier. These are first-party numbers, from an unreleased chip, on a synthetic test, relayed through a wire service, about a competitor's part that is itself not yet in shipping phones. The reports do not even agree on what the Qualcomm chip is called — some describe it as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 6, others as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 — which is a reasonable signal of how far this information has travelled from anyone who actually ran the test.

Android Authority, which has tested the Exynos side of the current generation, put the caveat plainly: benchmarks can be deceiving because they often do not account for sustained usage. The site's own Galaxy S26 Plus testing found the Exynos part winning on the leaderboard and then running into trouble in practice, with the reviewer describing shortcomings once the phone started to heat up prematurely.

That is the specific failure mode Exynos has been punished for. Peak scores have rarely been Samsung's problem. Holding those scores through a twenty-minute game or a long 4K recording session has been.

Five years of Snapdragon-only Ultras

The last Ultra to ship with a Samsung chip anywhere was the Galaxy S22 Ultra in 2022. Samsung then used Snapdragon exclusively in the Ultra tier for four shipped generations, from the S23 Ultra through the S26 Ultra.

If the S27 Ultra breaks that run, it will not break it everywhere. GSMArena's read of the reporting has Snapdragon staying in the US with Exynos going to Korea and Europe. SamMobile's version is narrower — South Korea plus select markets — and notes the S27 and S27 Plus keep Snapdragon options regardless. Both frame this as an initial order phase rather than a locked production plan.

What a European buyer should take from this

For now, the reported board order changes little for buyers. An Exynos motherboard existing means Samsung wants the option. It does not mean the option gets exercised. The company has built Exynos variants that never shipped before, and the entire point of ordering boards this early is to preserve a decision it has not made.

The rest of the S27 Ultra picture from the same reports is modest: a body close in size to the S26 Ultra, a small battery increase, and a camera change that drops the 10MP 3x telephoto while keeping the 50MP 5x. None of that suggests a generation Samsung is betting the house on.

Anyone shopping in the region where this actually matters has a clean test to wait for. Not a Geekbench chart — a sustained throttling run. If an Exynos 2700 Ultra reaches shops, independent sustained-load testing will matter far more than these early internal figures. If it does not, the leaderboard number will have been the least relevant figure in the launch.
