A 240W USB-C cable can still be slow. Read the other number.
TrueSpec puts power and data ratings on the cable itself. Independent checks show why phone and tablet owners need to read both, and what the tests cannot prove.

A cable can promise 240W charging and still move your phone's video files at USB 2.0 speeds. LTT's TrueSpec range makes that split unusually easy to see: the power rating stays the same while the data rating changes with length. For anyone packing a tablet, phone and portable drive, that second number deserves as much attention as the first.
The range is back in discussion after Ben Schoon's September 11 hands-on at 9to5Google. He welcomed the labels etched into both ends, while acknowledging that “it's pretty bulky and heavy”. These cables launched earlier this year; the useful September buying question is what their unusually explicit labels reveal about the cables already in your bag.
Same watts, very different file transfers
Creator Warehouse's current product selector divides the USB-C-to-C range into three groups. Versions from 10cm to 1m advertise 40Gbps. Lengths from 1.3m to 2.5m advertise 20Gbps. From 3m through 5m, the rating falls to 480Mbps. All carry the same 240W power rating.
Those are advertised link capabilities, not guaranteed file-copy speeds. The phone or tablet, computer, storage device and connection all matter. Buying the fastest cable cannot add a faster USB controller to a handset. Conversely, buying a long cable for convenient charging can quietly make it the wrong cable to grab for a large backup.
The distinction also explains why a wattage-only shopping filter is inadequate. It answers whether a cable is rated to carry the requested power. It leaves unanswered whether that cable suits your storage workflow. A cable that does its charging job perfectly can still be a poor purchase for moving footage.
What the independent testing actually establishes
In his April review, Cameron Dougherty Tech checked a 1m C-to-C cable and a 4m version, alongside an A-to-C model. His tester read the C-to-C cables' electronic identification chips, known as e-markers, and reported the advertised power and data capabilities. With a compatible charger, he could also see the 240W Power Delivery capability register.
That was not a sustained 240W load test. Dougherty explicitly said he lacked both a device demanding that much power and the equipment to test that draw. His separate Samsung T7 SSD test demonstrated the practical speed split between the long and short cables, but the drive could not saturate a 40Gbps connection. Useful checks, with identifiable boundaries.
Dougherty disclosed that LTT supplied his samples and said he had no ongoing affiliate relationship with the company. His results offer an outside check; they do not turn every advertised specification into an independently measured result.
LTT Labs' own February measurements add electrical detail, with an obvious commercial connection: the lab is affiliated with the seller. Its 1m TrueSpec sample had the lowest voltage drop among the 1m cables tested, but Apple's 2m charging cable beat the 2m TrueSpec in that comparison. The lab did not test data speeds in that article and judged the measured voltage losses unlikely to have a major effect on phone or laptop charging.
The label should survive the packaging
This is not a labeling idea that USB's standards body overlooked. The USB Implementers Forum's certification rules require USB-C-to-C cables entering its compliance program to carry a 60W or 240W power mark. Cables beyond USB 2.0 must also show their supported data rate. USB 2.0 cables are an exception to that additional speed-marking requirement.
That distinction matters when shopping: plain printed specifications and official certification logos are different things. USB-IF's product search lists products certified to bear its logo. The presence of a familiar connector, or a seller's claim that something meets a standard, should not be treated as the same evidence.
For a phone charging lead, check the power requirement and the length you need. For a tablet connected to an SSD, add the required data rate. For a display connection, verify the device's output support and the cable's stated display compatibility separately. Then keep the cable identifiable after its box has gone.
TrueSpec's appeal is that this information stays attached to the thing you actually use. Before replacing a working cable, check its specifications. Before buying a new one, insist on knowing both numbers.
