One UI 9 reaches the Galaxy S24, in South Korea first

Samsung's Android 17 update arrived for the S24 series and Fold6/Flip6 on October 7, three weeks after the S26. The file is half a gigabyte for beta users and 3.8GB for everyone else, and global dates are unconfirmed.

A Galaxy S24 owner who opens Settings this week may find One UI 9 waiting, or may find nothing, and which of the two depends on a calendar Samsung has not published. The Android 17 update reached the S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6 on October 7, three weeks after it started on the S26. For now it is live in South Korea only.

Three weeks, three generations

Samsung's own announcement is dated September 16. One UI 9 had debuted on the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8, and the rollout was beginning "starting with the Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra." Samsung's footnote added that the update "is expected to gradually roll out to other Galaxy devices." No dates for those devices were given.

Droid-Life reported on September 28 that the Galaxy S25 Ultra had a stable build in Korea (S938NKSUCDZIF) at 534MB, which it called "the beginning of things to come for US units." Samsung had opened the S25 beta only in early September, the site noted, while the S26 had been in beta since May. GSMArena's October 7 report says the S25 series and the Z Fold7 and Flip7 followed toward the end of September, and that the S24 generation is now next in line.

The global dates are shakier. Sammy Fans reported on September 28 that the global S26 rollout might slip, citing a tipster who said it had been "postponed to September 30, as of now." The site labelled that an unconfirmed date from a Samsung Community moderator. For the S24, Sammy Fans expects the wider release to begin October 12. That is a forecast from a Samsung-fan site, not a Samsung statement.

Which download you get

Sizes show who is being served first. GSMArena lists the S24 build at about 500MB for beta testers and about 3.8GB for people coming from One UI 8.5. The Fold6 and Flip6 builds are about 408MB and 3.5GB. SamMobile and IntoMobile both give the S24 Ultra firmware as S928NKSU6EZIF at 480.29MB. Sammy Fans reports the patch level as September 2026.

Droid-Life saw the same pattern on the S25 a few days earlier: a half-gigabyte file that suggested beta participants, against nearly 4GB on S26 units. Everyone else downloads the full package, so a Wi-Fi connection and spare storage are the practical requirement for an ordinary S24 owner on release day.

Check what an S24 already received before assuming. SamMobile reported that the global S24 and S24 FE got a 450.43MB September security update that fixed what it called "90 security issues" and explicitly did not include One UI 9. A phone can look current and still not be.

What actually changes

SamMobile's S24 write-up lists more Quick Panel customization, upgraded DeX and Samsung Notes, accessibility changes and a location privacy indicator. Sammy Fans spells out the panel work: the brightness slider, volume slider and media player can be resized separately, and the Sound Mode control comes off the volume slider. IntoMobile calls the update refinements, not a redesign.

Samsung's September announcement is longer, and its fine print matters more than its headline list. My FanCam, which tracks a selected person in a recorded video and keeps them centered, needs a Samsung Account login and is "not supported if there is no subject to track." Generative and Editable Cards in Now Brief also need the account, and Samsung says available functions "may vary by country, region, language, device model, and app." Whether every one of those features lands on a 2024 phone like the S24 is not stated in anything cited here. The S24 write-ups name Quick Panel, DeX, Notes, accessibility and the location indicator, not the S26's full AI list.

One item is a practical gain for anyone who keeps phones for years: a "Warranty and Care" menu in Settings. Samsung says it lets users check warranty coverage across connected devices, run self-diagnostics, view repair estimates and book service. The company also warns that estimated repair costs can vary by device model and region, so an S24 owner cannot assume the estimator is switched on.

The seven-year arithmetic

Sammy Fans notes the S24 series launched on Android 14 with One UI 6.1 and carries Samsung's seven-year OS upgrade pledge. It describes One UI 9 as the second major update toward that promise. Counting by Android version, 15, 16 and 17 make it the third. The mismatch is small, but it is the sort of detail that matters when a pledge is measured in years: the clock Samsung is running is the Android version number, and the S24 has now used three of its seven upgrades.

That is the useful reading of the schedule. A three-week gap between flagship generations is not a failing, and Samsung did start with the newest phone, as it has to. The point is that "gradually" is a rollout policy, not a date, and none of the reports cited here gives US S24 owners a Samsung-confirmed timetable.

What to do

Owners in South Korea, and beta testers, can check Settings, Software update, Check for updates today. Everyone else should expect the global start around October 12 per Sammy Fans, back up first as that site advises, and not install a half-gigabyte file expecting it to be the whole thing. For buyers weighing a used S24: this is the third Android jump the phone has received, and the seven-year promise is on track so far. A promise is still a number on a spec page until each update arrives.
