Apple lets used iPhone parts work, but every repair still ends at its server

Repair Assistant can restore calibration to genuine donor parts across current iPhones and iPads. The catch is a repair now needs Wi-Fi, current software and Apple's approval.

The screwdriver is no longer the last tool in an iPhone repair. After the display, battery or camera has been fitted, the phone must talk to Apple before the job is truly finished.

That conversation is more permissive than it used to be. Apple's current Repair Assistant documentation says genuine parts taken from another device of the same model can be reused on the iPhone 15 and later. The supported list has also spread into tablets, including recent iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini and standard iPad models. A salvaged screen can regain its calibration rather than losing features merely because it came from a donor device.

It is meaningful progress. It is also a peculiar definition of ownership: the component is physically in your phone, yet full function can still depend on a remote service, the latest operating system and the history of somebody else's Apple Account.

The donor part finally gets a second life

Repair technician Hugh Jeffreys demonstrated the change by moving parts between two iPhone 16 handsets. Repair Assistant appeared under Parts & Service History, restarted the phone into a special environment, checked the replacements online and paired accepted components to their new device. Features disabled by the swap returned, while Settings recorded whether a part was new, used or unknown.

That is a large departure from earlier iPhones, where swapping an otherwise functional genuine component could produce warnings or remove functionality. iFixit's testing reached the same broad result on the iPhone 16e: after swapping logic boards, it reported no pairing failures with original-equipment parts and said Repair Assistant worked as advertised.

Apple now lists far more repairable combinations than its launch-era version did. On current software, iPhone 16 and later models can finish repairs involving the back glass, battery, display, front and rear cameras, and enclosure. Some older phones are supported for fewer parts, but reuse from another same-model device is officially limited to iPhone 15 and later. This is not a universal amnesty for every useful component in the iPhone graveyard.

Three gates stand between fitted and finished

The first gate is software. Apple requires the latest iOS or iPadOS release. The second is connectivity: Wi-Fi is mandatory, and captive portals or enterprise networks using 802.1X are not supported. The third is power, with more than 20 percent battery required before calibration begins.

Those sound like modest prerequisites in a kitchen-table repair. They are less modest when the replacement is the battery, the phone cannot report its charge correctly, or a workshop is recovering an old device years after mainstream software support ends. Apple does not promise an offline calibration path in its public instructions.

The rollout also showed how much authority the server holds. In an early iOS 18 release-candidate test, microsoldering specialist Jessa Jones moved a genuine display and its sensor assembly between two iPhone 12 Pro handsets. Repair Assistant repeatedly looped or reported a server or network problem, and Face ID remained unavailable. That test predates Apple's stable implementation and used a model that is still outside the official used-parts reuse list. It is valuable not as a verdict on today's iPhone 16 process, but as a picture of what happens when the hardware repair succeeds and the software handshake does not.

Activation Lock follows the component

Apple's anti-theft rule adds another condition. A part associated with a device in Lost Mode or protected by Activation Lock may require the donor owner's Apple Account credentials before Repair Assistant will unlock it. Without those details, Apple says the part may be impossible to finish, ineligible for Apple warranty or AppleCare service, and capable of blocking a trade-in.

The logic is defensible: a market for unrestricted cameras and biometric assemblies could reward phone theft. The awkward part is verification. Jeffreys noted that a repairer buying a loose donor screen may have no practical way to confirm its account status in advance. The safest supply is therefore not simply a genuine used part, but one with a documented donor and an activation history the seller can clear.

There is a second wrinkle. Ninja Repair recently tested an aftermarket iPhone 13 battery built around a chip designed to present itself as genuine. Repair Assistant accepted it and Settings recorded it as a used genuine battery. The demonstration does not establish that every such battery is safe or durable. It does show that Apple's software verdict is not a laboratory assessment of cell quality. The screen can report what the identification electronics tell it.

Repairable, with an asterisk in the cloud

For an owner, the practical checklist is short. Confirm that the donor part came from the same model, obtain proof that the donor device was removed from its owner's account, update the phone before opening it, and keep a known-good Wi-Fi network available. After reassembly, go to Settings, General, About, then Parts & Service History and choose Restart & Finish Repair.

If that works, Apple's newer system is plainly better than disabling a perfectly good screen forever. It creates a real second-hand market for original components and preserves a visible repair record for the next buyer. But Repair Assistant has not ended parts pairing. It has moved pairing onto the device and opened the gate wider.

The distinction matters. A repair you can complete yourself is not quite the same as a repair you can complete only while the manufacturer continues to answer.
